You did well in a difficult situation. Getting a $1000 is a bonus but it also seems the bad guy got away even though he was arrested. I'd take that money and use it to express just how easy this freak got off. It was money to make you feel better so use it to inform others how easy this guy got off. He could have done far worse to a less prepared person and in time will.
