Consider availability and cost before you fall in love with a 40!! Just saying!!

I would go with the S&W Shield or something else in 9mm. The 9x18 is less powerful and about equal to the .380 plus you would have a much larger selection of ammo to pick from. Plus with a S&W, Glock etc. you have a warranty in case there are issues. With the Mak your on you own.

I would consider one thing...ammo availability. For my carry gun I must be able to go to any big box store to get ammo. Yes, I have a Cabelas and a Sportsmans warehouse where I live. But I want to shoot my carry gun a lot. 9x18 is not sold everywhere. If we were talking a gun to shoot once in a while that would be different. But a dedicated carry gun should be shot often. .380, 9mm, 38 special, .357 mag, 40 S&W , 44 special, 44 magand 45 ACP are all available at Walmart under normal conditions. 9x18 is not.

The exact reason I stay with 9mm!! Availability and high capacity mags!! Shoot the G26, sweet shooter and you can buy up to 33 round mags for it!! I even think there is 150 mag drum available for it!! Glocks interchangeable mags in 9mm makes it unique!!

Similarly, my EDC is an XD9sc. Several mag sizes are available for it as well. Perhaps, not the 150 mag drum. But, IMO, I don't see that as a viable option for....well, anything really. But, to each their own.

I digress.

Standard magazines for the XD9sc are 13 rds and 16 rds with a mag spacer. If price is a concern, they can be found at sub $400 prices.

Glock, XD, S&W...the argument as to what is 'best' will out live any of us. Find what works for you...you'll be fine with any of them. All are solid options.

As far as calibers go - 9mm, .38spc., .380 with modern ammo are the smallest I prefer. But, with .380, I think you pay too much for what you get. In my neck of the woods, it's more expensive than the other two options.

I missed the makarov being 9x18 i guess thats what comes of posting after midnight. I agree with the above posts. Stay away from 9x18. A gun without bullets becomes an expensive paperweight real fast.
