Sorry to here about your incident. I myself was mugged by 3 men at the age of 19 soon after i moved to the city. My wrist and nose was broken along with 2 cracked ribs and a concussion. I wasnt legally able to carry at the time(even though i owned a several handguns.)But i figured i would follow the law like a good american. As others have stated a quality 9mm or .380 subcompact or a snub .38 would be great options. You really just have to try to shoot or at the very least handle all of the different models to see which one works best for you.

I recently picked up one of the Thunder 45 Ultra Compact Pro and have to say I have been really impressed with it's...."shootability" vs it's ease of carry. THe 9mm is an excellent pistol as well. Especially at it's price.

Still like my 1911s more but truth is truth. Bersa is making some pretty good guns.

Have any of you guys shot the Px4 storm .40. I have a local gun shop owner who is willing to sell me one for about $650 and includes 50 rounds, 1 14 round clip, 2 10 round clips, and both shoulder and waist holster.

I have the subcompact and if she shoots anything like mine you will not be disappointed. With all the extras it would be coming with I'd say the price is about right.

Sig p290rs... DAO, no safety (good thing and it's fine because its double action (trigger cocks and fires)), 9mm, lifetime warranty, and really small that you can carry anywhere on your person
