So back to the point, the cartridge should be able to do the job, and should not be overpowered for the job.

Ergo it would make little sense to carry 44 rem mag revolvers for self defense against people in the city.

Similarly the 357 mag is also overpowered.

However the 40's, 10mm's, 45ACP, 9mm and 38 specials are all very similar and just fine for self defense for everything except bears.

But with bears you are back to the 44 mag class again.
10mm is more powerful than 357 mag. 357 is fine, you just have to choose the correct ammo, same as any other caliber.

And revolvers are just fine too, both have pluses and minuses, both will do the job.

Yeah! I do. But my grand son is just out of AIT and still my grandson even if I don't approve of some of his decisions. I have expressed just those thoughts to him.

Back to the main point, a 357 snub loses a lot of power over a 4" or 6" 357. Depending on the ammo a 2" 357 revolver will with 125 grain HP will be in the 1250 fps range +-50 fps. It is hotter than a 124 grain 9 but a lot recoil even in a 25 oz gun. it is not going to over penetrate unless you are using hardball. The 9mm with hardball has a reputation for over penetrating. There is very little risk of an HP passing through unless the HP gets clogged.

Even a handgun bullet does pass through the goblin it will be deformed or tumbling. In either case the bullet is not going very far or going to hit very hard. In a life or death situation I will take my chances with a civil suit. If I am alive I can make more money.

Nobody wants collateral damage. If its a major concern I suggest carrying pepper spray instead. Guns are dangerous when fired..........

What are "air marshals"? Sky Marshals do not carry 44's.

No worries Mate!!!
Just use any of the current crop of good SD ammo available and you will get a good balance of expansion and penetration. BUT if you must error, error on the side of penetration. If the round don't make it to the 'vitals' it will not be effective in stopping the fight!

PS: The 125 gr 357 mag JHP is not over powered, it is as close to perfect, in the terminal ballistics arena, as it gets when dealing with the need to stop 'human' targets!

there is another factor to consider when discussing the myth of over-penetration. if you hit your intended target, even on the off chance it does go all the way through, it will have shed much of it's velocity and energy.
