That has never once been proven to be an explicit surety, and when it does happen, it's almost overwhelmingly more likely to happen to police, where the very nature of their job puts them at high risk of it. The average Joe (me) or Jane (you) has no real overwhelming documented proof that it's a certainty. I've actually contacted the CDC since apparently they help keep track of this stuff, and the response I got from them was that the data was so insignificant that no direct correlation could be made by them.

Now, that's not to say I think it wise for someone like me to open carry in crime ridden downtown Detroit. Actually, I think the better decision is to stay away from there altogether.

Unfortunately, there are about as many recorded examples of open carry DETERRING crime as there is of open carriers being targeted. Because it's kinda hard te track the crimes that DON'T happen.

However, and this relates to Terry's opening post...
In my personal OPINION, meaning I have not gone through a bunch of stats or numbers, but I'm basing this on news articles I've read: it LOOKS TO ME, like a person is more likely to be harmed in their own home, by one of their own unsecured firearms. So yes... you're doing the right thing in my opinion by maintaining positive control of your firearm. Whether you choose to keep it concealed, open, or shove it up your butt and cluck like a chicken, you're doing the right thing. Wait. I take that back. Don'e shove it up your butt

I'll add to all that...

On a couple different occasions I've issued open challenges for people to find instances of civilian open carriers being targeted by eagle eyed SEAL type criminals. The first time, 8 cases were brought up that I grudgingly conceded were legitimate. Several weren't even from this country.

The second time around, I think some industrious soul brought around ten cases to my attention.

I excluded police officers for the simple fact that A: they aren't civilians, which brought me to B: their jop requires them to put themselves at EXTREMELY HIGH risk of personal harm, the likes of which VERY few AVERAGE civilian will ever experience. And when that average civilian does experience it, it's almost always a one time thing, and rarely a daily occurence.

Even still, I think the stats I found on police officer's firearms being snatched was something like 65 cases reported nationwide. This obviously does not take into account police being shot for simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time as an armed officer.

I can find more instances of accidental discharges (NEGLIGENT discharges) killing or injuring innocent bystanders. Wasn't there a thread here not a couple days ago of a GLOCK ND injuring SIX INNOCENT people at a restaurant?

Yet we all still choose to carry or own firearms.

So anywhere is fine to open carry in, except Detroit, right?

I never said that. If it were possible to go through every post I've made on the subject, you'd see where I'm a proponent of using discretion where discretion is the order of the day. That, in my opinion, means pretty much ALL urban areas. Not necessarily because of crime, but also because of uninformed public panic.

My reference to detroit was simply that, I reference.

Well, you were referencing crime. Whereas the argument usually comes up in reference to open carriers having the police called on them. I've always advocated drscretion in places where it's reasonable to expect open carry to cause alarm. Which is almost every major urban center.

So yes. I do urge discretion in areas where it will cause alarm. But never because some sharp eyed thug is going to pick your gun out of a crowd and target you. There's just no reasonable evidence to support that theory other than a relative handful of isolated incidents. And like I said, if we want to REALLY base our lifestyles on such a few occurences, then we all must be absolutely insane for even having guns around to begin with, since the number of deaths resulting from negligence is astronomical in camparison, right?

Wrong. Everyone here on this forum is at least THOUGHT to take reasonable measures in securing their firearms at home, whether on their body, or locked away. So too, should reasonable precautions be taken in ALL other areas where death, harm, or panic could result from negligence.

Can't yell "fire" in a crowded movie theater. So maybe open carrying a gun in a busy downtown area isn't the best idea either.

Cinderocka just told me recently about a near miss while dropping something heavy from a truck she was working on. Discretion said "move. Let it fall." As a result, the concrete shop floor was chipped, and she was able to walk away in one piece.

I'll never be one to say that everyone should open carry, everywhere, every time. And I'll be the first to admit that I occasionally conceal (illegally).

But I will NEVER concede that open carry makes a target out of the carrier, or that it incites criminals to shoot them first. NEVER. As I said, the evidence just isn't there to support that notion.
