IN MY OPINION: Yes. Because you have a VIOLENT intruder in your home. A reasonable person could conclude that if the intruder is armed and threatening vilolence against your pet....they are more than CAPABLE and WILLING TO BE AN IMMEDIATE AND OTHERWISE UNAVOIDABLE DANGER OF DEATH OR GRAVE BODILY HARM. I have researched it, and found no precedent one way or another...but it is a reasonable conclusion to make.
I'm sorry, but if there's an armed intruder in my house, they shouldn't even be allowed enough time to threaten fluffy.

I think the fist-fight scenario has a couple of factors not mentioned...How old are you? Are you 80? You might not want to cross your fingers and hope for the best at that age. Are you a woman? A punch to the head may just snap your neck. How about health? You may be 35 but in poor health. Or..disabilties? Everyone is different. Personally, my fist fightin days are over..so, I'll do what I have to do in order to protect myself.

Yes...they WERE mentioned. It is up there in the part about DISPARITY OF FORCE. You will also notice that I put as the premise for the paragraph..."ASSUMING RELATIVELY EQUAL SIZE AND CONDITION".

>>Snort<< we had this cat once, back home on the farm, that was THE MEANEST , deadliest critter you ever wanted to face. It was worse than a 'roid ragin' Rotty. We called her "Fluffy the attack cat" and thats just what she was! She was a guard cat, shredded more than one person she didnt like in her house and even shredded the neighbors GSP. (funny tale there i might relay one day)

I do NOT like cats. Thank god I am allergic, and so is my daughter...so the question of getting one never comes up. It's one of those "Not Gonna Happen" things.

same here man, NOT a fan of them things...especially with my allergies as well.

BUT we DO have one....we we're over run with a mouse infestation a couple years back. Was up at moms and stopped by one of the neighbors back home whos farm was still in operation and picked up a true barn kitty....Guess what? no more mousys in dah housy!

Brought the little flealine home, next morning i ran the eldest out to work. Was gone maybe 20 minutes, upon arriving home, walked thru the door to see this... (please ignore the floor, i hadnt ran the vacuum yet that day that damn lab sheds more than any beast i have ever met!)

At that point i decided he could stay. I would just eat my claritin and deal with the allergies.

The cat and i have an ongoing arrangement, I no see mice, i no see cat in the sites.

My lab was a damned fur manufacturer, she shed so much. I loved that dog...but more than once I wanted to make dog tacos out of her when I had to spend an hour vaccuuming when I could have been reloading or shooting, or sitting on the couch watching TV.
