Indiana Permits

I got my Indiana L.T.C.H.(license to carry a handgun) on 10/08/2008.
It took five weeks to arrive. It is a lifetime permit. And if you want to
open carry you can.

You are correct that you can open carry in Indiana, but I think you might phrase it better to avoid misunderstanding.

Open carry is legal not by any virtue of the "license to carry a handgun", but by virtue of the fact that Indiana Code does not address open carry in any manner......

Congrats on getting your permit. Enjoy it safely. :)

I just recently moved back to Indidana. I lived in Terre Haute most of my life, moved to Louisville, and just came to live in Jeffersonville, IN. Since you just got your permit, can you answer a couple of questions?

1. Is it legal to open-carry without a permit?

2. What are the exact laws to have a firearm in your car without a permit?

3. Did you have to take a class for your permit? I heard in Indiana you don't have to physically be in a firearms class for eight hours.

As I said in the previous post, Indiana code does NOT address open carry. Therefore, by omission, it's legal. You do however run the risk of being reported as "a man with a gun" by another uninformed citizen.... it's your call.

Indiana code..... http://www.in.gov/legislative/ic/code/title35/ar47/

Classes are NOT required for the license to carry a handgun.

How much did the lifetime permit cost? I think when mine comes due to renew, I'm gonna go lifetime.

Jay 10-18-2008 12:07 PM

If you've previously held a license, the cost is $100..... $40 locally, and $60 to the ISP. You can renew within 6 months of the expiration of your current license.

In the previously posted link, http://www.in.gov/legislative/ic/code/title35/ar47/ch2.html the costs, and procedures are detailed.

I was just wondering if anyone knew the answer to a question for me. I have a current valid indiana permit and with all this government reform going on I would like to up it from a four year to a lifetime. I have heard both ways that you can renew it only up to 6 months early and I have also heard you may renew it whenever. Does anyone know the actual on that?

unfortunately mine does not expire until sometime in 2011 so if it is only 6 months early I am stuck for right now.

crizzy, see my post just before yours......

1. NO! You can not have a Handgun on your person, except under limited circumstances, without a Permit in Indiana.

2. None! See question one. not legal to have a handgun on your person or in your car without a permit.
The only exceptions are:
a. when on your own property or business premisis.
b. traveling to and from your firearms dealer or gunsmith's business and your home.
I don't know of any other exceptions.

3. No! No class required for a permit.
