Just keep firing until all threats are neutralized. The first over whelming force of arms is more often the victor.

In the video, Principles of Home Defense, Jim Harris advises hardening the house so that an intruder has to make a noise breaking a window to get in, considering buying an alarm system, cutting back foliage around the house that could hide a prowler, installing a dead-bolt lock on the bedroom door , keeping a Mini-MagLite flashlight by the phone, having a family defense plan, using a Quick-Safe gun box by the bed, ensconcing yourself in your room or advancing only far enough to protect other members of the family depending on your situation, staying behind cover or consealment in your room, calling 911 and staying on the line, keeping extra keys on an orange tag to toss out the window to the police and...If you end up capturing a suspect (1) Keep your distance .
(2) Order him to drop anything in his hands . (3) Order him to prone out and look away from you .

Massad Ayoob, on the Personal Defense Network site, advises planning to take cover behind some safe, bookcase or other object that could stop a bullet and is positioned to allow you to watch the approaches .
Mike Dalton's advice is similar to the above .

Security consultant and former armed robber, Ray Johnson advised any woman alone to yell, " Someone's in the house, John ! Get the shotgun ! I'm calling the police ! " .
Here's a link to Rob Pincus's advice : http://www.personaldefensenetwork.com/video/001515_fundamentals-of-home-defense/

Note : Vice-President Joe Biden advises shooting through the door or going outside and firing two shotgun blasts to scare off anyone outside . If you try Biden's advice, expect the police to take your gun and store it safely for you free of charge and to give you secure housing for awhile ( jail ) .
