UPDATE:
My friend is still in ICU. He's still in and out of consciousness because he went 30 seconds w/o blood-flow to his brain...
The police did let us know that they have THREE suspects in custody, but won't say anything more. Interestingly enough, around this same time period (3 weeks or so) there were numerous armed robberies performed by 3 armed men within a 1 1/2 miles of that area.

Sorry about your friend, I live in Indiana and used to work in Louisville sometimes doing construction and know how rough parts of the city can be. What part of town did this happen in? I would guess the west end, like the Portland area but I guess it could happen anywhere.
I hope they catch the sack of s**t that did it.
Sounds like you and your friends should move, a good place to move would be about 30 miles west on I-64. Little town called Corydon. I park my truck in my driveway with the windows down and the key in the egnition, great place to live.

Update?
Like said above, never underestimate power of prayer.
So terribly sorry to hear, it's disgusting what some people do to other humans.
Truly good luck with everything, and remain strong for him/his family.
I almost hate to say it, but in situations like these (and surprised nobody mentioned it earlier-read every response) sometimes I think death is easier for everyone....
Regards

It was in smoketown (just east of 64, Oak and Clay area near shelby park). I don't live there, but its where my church is so I have a lot of friends that choose to live in that neighborhood. I'm not particularly worried about my neighborhood.
Like I said, they have 3 suspects but won't tell us anything else.
As far as my friend goes, he's slowly recovering. He can talk, but is always in a daze from the drug loss and the pain killer he's on. He's really depressed right now. We'll help him pull through...

Only two places where I have built a sweat were Orlando FL (honkin' big revolver in my nose cuz the fellow behind me was on drugs and didn't like the fact that I stopped for the red light) and Louisville KY - don't know why but the hotel was great and so on, just found ourselves on the wrong side of the tracks one night and got the willies... one of the few times I have put my hand on the butt of my pistol while driving. Bizarre.
Laws need changing and politicians need to read the will of the people and follow it. And take the empirical data and use it. What does this mean? A 'national reciprocity bill' at the Federal Level just like Drivers Licenses. You got a permit of any kind from any state... you are good to go concealed in any state. Period. End of story. I am getting tired of holstering and unholstering as I drive across our nation and I am tired of being refused CCW/CCP because I happen to have a house in Canada and travel through the states because I am retired. It makes no good sense. Why do I need ten carry permits?
And last but not least we need some Federal laws (very strong Federal laws) that will ensure that we are not held as criminals for defending ourselves, etc.
The bad guys need to start worrying. Seriously worrying. When it gets to the point where the police are unable and/or unwilling to protect you then the tools to try and protect yourself need to be readily available.
Empirical data shows that we don't wind up like the wild, wild west, nor do we have blood running in the streets - but for some reason (duh?) violent crime seems to plummet.
You want to see what happens at the other end of the scale just take a look at the United Kingdom where the bad guys are so bold that home invasions no longer take place at night... they take place in broad daylight because that's when it's most convenient. And the bad guys know that the police will not respond unless in a two man car nor without backup by an 'armed escort' vehicle as not all carry guns. Our friend in Manchester has quit after almost 20 years as a LEO and become a hardware salesman. Go figure.
