I keep 3 rifles and a shotgun on a gunrack up on the bedroom wall, a couple with full clips. A .45 in the nightstand drawer with a full clip. Everything else is in a gunsafe, for storage. I have no little kids, but when I'm not in the house, the bedroom is locked.
I figure if a weapon is locked away too tightly or unloaded, it becomes less effective for home defense. For me chambering a round is the most preparation I'm willing to go through to be home-defense ready.
