There has been 6 bear attacks in Washington state on humans in the past 90 years. There is an estimated 10 Grizz in the state. I would think a .45 ACP would be adequate.

That's ten bears too many.

I would get a 50 S&W if you want a pistol to keep a bear off of you. I doubt you will notice recoil if your trying not to git et.

It all started when he was a little boy, & Care Bears on ice came to town,,, he was invited backstage after the show. The drinks were flying, it was a crazy scene, and Lucky Bear, well Lucky Bear pressed his luck a little too much,, And Orange,, who's been packing since he was in pull ups,, had to put him down...
And swore to this day,, to kill any bear on sight.......

I wouldn't want to be starring down a griz with anything smaller than a .308. That being said, your best bet in a handgun round is going to be fired out of a wheel gun. A .357 would work for 2 and 4 legged beasts assuming you can place your shots and have the right loads. If you want compact and effective, take a look at the ruger Alaskan and s&w trail boss in 44 mag. They are a handful but 44 specials ain't bad for practice and self defense

Well went to the range today and shot some Winchester Super X out of my .270 and the barrel blew out on me so now I am going to have to get a new rifle first. Savage won't cover it because they said under normal use the barrel should never blow out which is correct. I can only assume The pawn shop ion some way did pretty serious damage to the barrel.
Did you ever get any pictures of the blow-out? That isn't something I see regularly.
