More than likely, a .40 or .45 is gonna really p*ss off an already upset bear. Ya might wanna file off the front sight so it dont hurt so much when it shoves it up your backside. But seriously, most anything should help. I sure wouldnt rely on either to kill a big bear, but it might persuade it to go elsewhere. You might want to carry a can or 2 of pepper spray also.
Keep in mind that you dont have to outrun a bear, just outrun the slowest member of your party. The .40 would be great for shooting the least liked party member in the leg to slow him down.

+1 to that. If the caliber doesn't have magnum in its name it will not be effective. An angry bear can kill you with one swipe of a paw so its best to kill it as quickly as possible and for that you need a round that can penetrate the hide and do some damage. Don't rely on the proverbial head shot, a bears skull is amazingly thick and the head is relatively small compared to the body.

As the saying goes, any gun is better than your hand. the 9 could penetrate into its ear or or eye socket and enter its brasin, but more than likely you would just piss it off, and do more harm to yourself. As a last resort you could ram it into his mouth just before it bites down on you and hopefully do some damage to his jaw whereby he couldn't bite down on you as hard. But that would be lucky, at best. (they do write abouyt these lucky shots in magazines, but they are few and far between to rely upon).

My thoughts are' and I am sure some you can tell me whether right or wrong, that multiple shots hitting the same bone in a short amount of time would weaken that bone and at least one round would get through. I have tried .357's and .44 magnums and both are just to much gun for me. I will just have to make do with the SR1911 since that is what I have decided on.

Don't take this the wrong way, but it sounds like your best weapon in this case is Prayer.

If a semi-auto is one of your requirements, consider a Desert Eagle in .44 mag. It has more capacity than a revolver, is accurate, and handles recoil better than a revolver. Drawbacks are price and weight, but otherwise certainly worth considering.

BOOOOOOOO! HISSSS! BOOOO!

whatever; it takes all kinds.

I vote for the SR1911. Though I would think the pre-uglied Glock 20 would have better ammo available for offending large predators.

Since Desert Eagles were mentioned, i do know that the .357 mag DE recoils very similar to a .45acp 1911, but the large grip is too much for alot of people.

It might also be smart to contact a few guide services that are used to dealing with bear and cougars and ask what their MINIMUM cartridge allowances are.
