Well, I guess I am dated with you also, we also had that and yes there were no (ACCIDENTS) with I didnt know it was loaded, but we were a hunting family, so we were also taught safety at the house, we did not walk in the house with the bolt closed.
My dad was on the rifle team in high school. They shot 22s in an indoor range under the school.
Same here. I went to the same High School as my Dad and of course by the time I got there that area had been converted into a storage area and the "green room" for the theater kids to put their makeup on and talk about slacks and handbags.

Sounds like to me the fellow was not carrying the gun in any fashion of a holster. Common sense would tell you it is not a good idea to shove a loaded weapon down your pants without some king of trigger guard or safety. I would just say it was a hard lessoned learned.
