I also carry a full size .45 (RIA 1911A1). I do feel more confident in the 1911 vs my Bersa .380, not only because of the knockdown power of the round but because I shoot my .45 a little better than my .380 so Im more confident in myself as well.

I carry a 45 mist because I seem to shoot them better over all when it comes to being in a hurry. But I don't ever feel under gunned even with a pocket carry 9mm. But if I was to only have one pistol it would be a full size 1911. I shoot them pretty well and I'm comfortable carrying them in most situations. It's more about my being too lazy to dress to hide a gov framed 1911 more than anything when I carry anything else. I can toss my little Sig on my pocket and go to the store and be OK with it.

So, whatever you shoot best (in a hurry) is what you should have to defend yourself. Because more often than not it's going to be you're in a hurry to keep your bacon form being fried. Use good ammo and you wonty have any trouble making it work. You do your part the ammo will do it's part.
Drum,..I can't agree More! I think for the most part not enough folks think over how they would exit safely from a situation, with they & their loved ones intact. My Wife thinks it's "Overkill" to work this stuff out on Paper/Computer but in the end she sees what i'm talking about. Not that were some "Over the top" types,..but we have emergency supplies and a secure enough Home that unless someone is rolling down the street in an Abrams or An M-60 MBT I think we'll be ok.
But yet,..we practice & discuss....and for those times I wish I had real "human" sons...
I have to give Classes for Teens(don't HAVE to,....I choose to!) at our library, and the Manager asked me to do a presentation on my service experiences and my other forthcoming book about the modern day warriors of our country...(but I'd rather bring someone along like ThreeTango;-)....still don't know how I'm getting through that with the 30th Annv. of My first WIA coming up...
Outside of that If anyone wants to help me test out .9mm, .40, or .45 SD ammo please let me know,..results to be part of a forthcoming review of Commonly available SD ammo....But if i'm stuck "downwind" of the crapper and i only had 1 Handgun it'll most likely be a 5" 1911....

If you shoot the 45 better than the others then the confidence is justified, but if you shoot any of the others better than the 45 the confidence is not justified.
Hit probability is the most important factor. If you do not get there first with the most it doesn't matter what gun your are carrying! Not to mention that all of the above are ballistically equal when it comes to 'stopping the fight' so the 'caliber' should have nothing to do with the confidence factor unless you are still believing in the 45 myth.!

It would appear we have found something most of us agree on!!!

A Texas Ranger once said. I carry a .45 because Colt does not make a .46 Caliber handgun.

The thing that makes me comfortable when carrying a 1911 is suspenders. I don't need kids putting stick it notes on me saying "Stomp out crack."

Borrowed my buddies XDs.. even low its not full size, those big .45 ACP rounds are nice. Perhaps a slight boost in confidence knowing that the round is bigger and more powerful.
