What benefit would that huge pistol have over a rifle?

some states don't allow hunting deer with certain rifles and are limited to either a rifle chambered in a pistol cartridge, a shotgun or a pistol.

plus some people like to deer hunt with pistols. i have a co-worker that hunts with a scoped, 8.75" barreled 44 Magnum pistol.

Where I live in Michigan I cant hunt with a rifle, I can only hunt with a shotgun or a handgun over I believe a .35caliber. I would have to get a tag for a county that is above the shotgun and handgun zone to use a rifle.

The reason I carry a pistol when deer hunting is to retrieve downed deer. Unless a mature deer is run by dogs it is not going to get very far from virtually impenetrable cover. I keep a bush axe in the back of my truck when I am hunting without dogs. Almost all of my stands are on the edge of a cutover where the lay of the land creates a bottleneck. If the deer runs at all after I shoot it, I need to cut a path to drag the deer out of the cutover. In brush that thick I want my hands free so I can move anything from briers to spider webs.

The brush in this area is so thick when my dogs bay a deer in the brush their ears are torn up so badly they need a weeks rest.
