I think some Folks just don't get it. Faith in G-D( christian-Judaica) is under Attack by Gov't agencies, Socialism/Communism, and most of the Arab world. If you think G-D can protect you Alone without any human intervention, I'm sorry to tell you this, but you have been Sheltered from what's going on outside of your general area...I've seen a little more of the world in my 53+ years maybe, or maybe it's because I grew up in NYC.
Edit Added: G-D helps those who help themselves...I choose to Help myself.

Doc- old story.

Man was in an area that was flooding- forced him from the first story of his home to the second. Rescue team came thru with a boat, told him "Get in- we'll save you!" He shouted back "I believe the Lord will take care of me!"

Later the water is getting into the second floor. Another boat comes by- "Get in the boat!" "No, the Lord will take care of me!"

Pretty soon, his is up on the roof. A helicopter comes in to a hover, drops a sling, and over the loudspeaker tells him to get in the sling. Once again- "The Lord will look after me!" But presently, the waters wash him away.

He arrives at the Pearly Gates, meets St. Peter. Rather shaken, he asked "Why did I drown? I thought the Lord would take care of me?"

With a puzzled look, St. Peter checked his record book, and shook his head. "I don't understand this," he said. "By our records, we sent you two boats and a helicopter."

God does protect. He also gave us free will and the ability to protect ourselves. When it is my time to go that's it. But I am not going to try God by acting ignorant. With some of the logic I have read here since I believe God protects me I shouldn't look both ways when crossing the street? No I need to proactively take reasonable steps to protect my life and the life of my family. I cannot foresee all of the dangers life has and I cannot even avoid all of the dangers that I do see. But in those instances I will just have to have faith and trust that Gods will, will be done.

I always love this story! It brings to mind 2 Corinthians 3:5:

"Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;"

This simple verse tells us that God gave us intelligence, wisdom, strength, reason, judgement and values to deal with the everyday problems and conflicts. If we can grow vegetables or hunt, should our families go hungry? We are given skills to use and provide for ourselves, and in the same light, we are given strength by faith in God to bear the problems that no single human can handle alone.

Lakeland ministers shot at church by former church deacon
Pastor William Boss was kneeling, leading church members at the Greater Faith Christian Center in prayer before the Sunday morning service, when Jeremiah Fogle walked into the sanctuary with a loaded gun.

Fogle, a former deacon at the Lakeland church, walked up to Boss, took a closer look to make sure it was him and shot Boss once in the back of the head. Then Fogle turned and shot the Rev. Carl Stewart, the church's associate pastor, three times before two parishioners tackled him, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

it happens in church just like any where else, this happened in Lakeland Fl in 2013.

I'm a pastor of an urban, multinational church in Houston. I have seen at our church just this past year...

* Several homeless folks verbally abusive toward our staff.
* A gang member seeking refuge from his gang and running from law enforcement.
* Several mentally/emotionally unstable individuals asking for spiritual counsel.
* A con artist who may have been packing heat at events (holding small purse tightly under arm). She threatened some of our leaders and even said she would sue the church unless we paid her a certain amount (idiot!).
* The Denny's across the street was robbed by armed men (several employees were pistol-whipped).
* Shots fired on the street next to church parking lot while scouts were meeting outside.
* Our next door neighbor was an international drug dealer; we didn't let our kids play outside for two years. He was finally busted by joint DEA/FBI, now serving 30 to life. But one night he had a shoot out with thugs who pursued him into his home. And we regularly had mysterious cars pulling up outside our house at all hours.
* My wife was "followed" while jogging one early, dark morning. A few weeks later a teenage girl was abducted. My wife no longer runs in our neighborhood.
* A retired minister who attended our church was shot in the head at his home not far from our church.
* We routinely witness the result of shootings, arrests, and not so nice things happening (e.g. prostitutes, drug deals).

I have never been a fan of carrying firearms, nor had I been around them much. I now own one (Love my Sig SP2022) and will soon be CHL holder. I am at the range at least once a week, and I've become more aware at home and at church. I started a gun club at church so I would know who carries (and to have some fun!!), and that has brought some excellent conversations about establishing some sort of "Eyes and Ears" (security) team.

We live in a transitional community - from middle class suburban to lower income urban - and the dangers are real (more real than our parishioners know). And I am VERY THANKFUL to know we have a good number of CHL folks who carry at church; I like that they are trained to some degree. We also have law enforcement who attend, and who have told me, "If something goes down, just hit the ground, and you'll be safe!" LOL.

All that to say... As a pastor, I would want to know who in my church carries and is trained. But we are in a pretty rough context.

Oh, in case you are wondering... I LOVE my job, I LOVE my church, and I LOVE the community in which we minister. God is amazing!! And despite all that above, there are so many more wonderful things about being here... I wouldn't change it for the world (except of course the crime and social degradation).

I CC everywhere I go, including church. It's not a "fear" thing. It's a "I'm protecting my family from whack jobs" thing.

Praise be to the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.
