NEVER take a handgun with you to New York City. Even if it is properly packed in a locked container, separate from the ammo, and properly checked in! I have heard of people doing that and when they go to pick up their gun, they are arrested for possession of a handgun that is not registered.

Make sure you also check the laws of any state you may be passing through, especially if you might have to retake possession of your luggage.
