Apartment wall penetration?
Alright folks, first post on these here forums. The scenario is as follows:
You're awoken from a slumber to an intruder busting in your front door. You roll out of bed, grab your <insert favorite self defense handgun here> and make your way to him. Shots are exchanged, and a stray bullet from *your* weapon penetrates a wall and strikes the elderly man next door.
Two possible scenarios:
A) He is hit in the arm and is not seriously injured.
B) He is wounded and killed.
My question is this:
Where does the blame lie? Are you at fault for having a powerful enough round that it could do this kinda damage?
I'm new to the C&C world, so this may seem a little basic for some of you more worldly folks out there.
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Know your target and what is down range of your target. Your fault! You will be held responsible for knowing the capabilities of the weapon you are using and for its use.
There are alternatives both in weaponry and ammunition.
BTW, visit the http://www.firearmstalk.com/forums/f2/ and tell us a little about yourself.

Agreed. Your fault. Now, if it was fired from the BG, the blame may be placed on you until forensics comes back with results. But..practice to have shot placement.

Once you choose to pick up your weapon, you take on the moral and legal obligation of all that follows.
Always use your most powerful weapon first, your brain!

i agree your fault you might be cleared of criminal charges under the right circumstances but youll still be sued by the family of the old man and if you live in california youll probably be sued by the bad guy or his family and youll probably lose to both law suits

The blame lies with the tool behind the tool...kind of a silly question isn't it? Who else could possibly be to blame?

Indeed, what he said, and after you do that, start looking into shotguns, especially in small apartments with thin walls.

Hit what you aim at, understand your firearm well
AND hit up the new member thread before you ask questions like this.
Based on the information given, I hope you enjoy prison, it's all on you. It doesn't matter if the wootang clan was about to bust your nut you can't shoot the elderly guy next door with an errant shot.

I was always concerned with this also. Once you pull the trigger, you are responsible. I always thought something like a 44 bulldog would be better inside a house as it wouldn't penitrate the walls and go down the street. I hope I never have to find out.
