ankle holster - s&w shield 9mm

Anyone carrying a Shield in an ankle holster?

Seems like a large bug for the ankle. I can't even carry a derringer there comfortably. But I'm mighty boney at the joints.

I agree that the S&W Shield seems a bit on the large side for ankle carry, but if you need to carry it there, I would suggest having a custom holster made for it. A rig with the retention strap that fastens higher up the calf to hold the holster in place and offset the weight would be ideal.

Got an ankle holster and wear it everyday, very comfortable. just small enough.

Glad to hear it worked out for you! What holster or who made it? Can you post a pic?

Desantis apache ankle rig. Try to get a pic up later

Good luck man, I'm apparently too skinny or boney, because I can't get a holster that fits tight enough to be even remotely acceptable in comfort.

My ankle holster, with a gun that weighs only 10.5oz loaded, just grinds away at the bone, shifting and jiggling with every step I take.

Because of the size issue I barely have a quarter inch of Velcro attached and the rest just flops around getting in the way or tearing at my socks.

I've come to determine that carrying a gun is the single most inconvenient and uncomfortable thing I've ever chosen to do. Luckily I can accept pocket carry, or I'd never do it at all.

I have the opposite problem, my leg is almost too big, but it works. Might try to pocket carry, but the sheild seems just a little too big.

BTB,

It sounds like you have an ill-fitting holster and would do better with something custom made. You might ask at your local gun shop if there is a holster maker in your area you can meet with.

Also, anytime you change in your daily routine significantly, i.e. go on a diet, wear a retainer, starting an exercise program, changing shifts at work, carrying a gun, takes the human body and psyche three weeks before it develops into a common and familiar habit. In other words, the people that wear a holster for three days and say, "I can't do this, it drives me crazy" or remove it on days they just "can't take it" will never be comfortable with a firearm on their body. You can start with a lighter gun, but you MUST wear it EVERY day for three weeks before it becomes habit. If you are still uncomfortable on day 22, then you may be truly unadaptable to carry, but the people that wear it a couple hours and announce "I can't do this!" hasn't even tried. Commit to this as you would training or a college class and you'll be surprised how easy it becomes! :-)

Not saying I cant do it, in fact I really like the way it feels. Just saying I might also consider pocket carry, especially with the hot weather coming. All very good points though.
