Default A Tale of Two Headlines

Same story, but different vibe from each.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/feb/3/womens-basketball-coach-shoots-attackers-protect-s/

http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130202/METRO/302020380

Regardless, here's the story.

A 70-year-old women’s basketball coach at a Detroit high school shot two men trying to attack him while walking two girls to their cars in the school parking lot Friday night.

The coach, who has not yet been named, told 7 Action News that he was walking the girls to their cars at Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School when one of the robbers pulled out a gun and grabbed him by his chain necklace.

The coach then pulled out his concealed weapon and shot both of the attackers, who once attended the high school. The first teen was found dead on the median on Larned Street, and the second teen, a 16-year-old, was shot in the stomach and is in serious condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

The coach has a concealed pistol license and is a reserve police officer, ABC reports.

Now, the Detroit paper also notes the 70 year old coach was taken into custody. Just some more bias.

Taking the devils advocate. If you shoot someone, in most places you will be taken into custody until the stories are verified.

I know. I just found it interesting that the story that had the positive headline left that out, and the story that headlined someone was shot mentioned the shooter was in custody.

it's all about "packaging"

notice how the the new anti-gun campaign is wrapped up in "we need to keep our kids safe" packaging. gun control advocates have never met a bleeding heart they didn't like. so it's not about 2A rights or responsible gun owners....it's about "keeping kids safe". [and what better way to do that than NOT allow folks in schools a measure of self defense?)

This just goes to show how skewed things have gotten. If the 70 year old was kill and / or the girls he was escorting they would simply be listed as crime statistics and another call to ban guns. How about enforcing gun laws against the criminals and make it easier for people like this hero to get carry permits to protect themselves Florida has reasonable gun laws and most hand gun deaths are bad guy bad guy shootings. The press and too many politicians are attacking legal gun owners instead of coming down harder on criminals using guns during criminal activities. The NRA and non-NRA legal gun owners need to go on the offensive to protect and ease up on legal gun ownership. This way if the gun haters loose ground they may think twice before attacking legal gun ownership again. Fighting only a defensive position means we loose a little more each time. Allowing qualified people to own guns to protect themselves only while home is lunacy. That simply means the 2nd amendment only is operative, for most people, while home. Does this make any sense? Another scenario, you enter your home and are confronted by armed criminals, do you call time out so you can retrieve you gun which is looked in a safe. Most anti gun people chose not to own a weapon and that's fine for them. And if we chose to own a gun and to protects ourselves that should be our choice. IMHO

Not in Oklahoma. OK law prevents police from arresting folks who have exercised their right to self defense unless there is clear evidence a crime has been committed.

Detroit, MI is a sewer run by gang bangers. Detroit politicians are gun hating zealots and the Detroit police dep't is incompetent to the extreme.

The government has failed miserably in their efforts to stop criminals from having guns so in order to look like they are doing something they restrict the lawful gun owners. Incompetence and a lack of common sense prevail. The idea that if guns are outlawed then criminals wont be able to get them is absurd. Any good machinist can make a gun and then there is smuggling. The government could not stop booze or drugs and they wont be able to stop guns either. Even if it were possible it would just give the criminals a bigger advantage over people that are weaker then themselves.

what are they teaching you youngsters in school these days?

it said he was in custody, not charged or arrested. in custody, meaning he is being questioned about it. usually most cases this is SOP to get the details of the incident and to find out the truth.

The 70-year-old was taken into custody. He has a valid concealed pistol license, authorities say.
