In the countryside that works fine, but it makes me cringe however to think of 223 flying all over the neighborhood in a cityscape or the urbs.

If all you have is a 223 then I would say you forgot to buy a pistol first. JHP ammo works well in any 9mm or 45ACP and anything in between.

A 12 gauge is much better for CQB than a 223 as well.

But in this case around all these barns, the 223 was ok I suppose.

Good result, does it matter what type of firearm he used.

yes.

he chose correctly by taking a rifle to a pistol fight.

the ar15 in 223/556 is probably the best choice for home defense in a dense urban environment since the round is the least likely to penetrate more than one wall. most pistol rounds including the 380acp will go through walls easily as will shotguns.

the reason police use the ar15 a LOT is because it has a very good record of not being an overpenetrator when hitting humans dwellings and cars.

Maybe the houses are built differently in America, here most are brick and block. I personally think a shotgun would be a better choice if someone is not happy using a handgun.

This shooting happened in my town, I'm glad to hear that the man was safe and that he was able to defend and protect himself.

Frangible (HP or SP) .223 is highly UNLIKELY to penetrate very far, especially after hitting a person in the torso. Our SWAT entry teams use 55 gr HP ammo and have yet to penetrate all the way through a person, much less a house.

FMJ is a different story, especially M-855 Green tip.

It is a common practice on many new homes to have brick on the front and hardy plank siding on the gable ends. The houses are not far apart. Hardy plank is durable and inexpensive.
