This chief is not one who is looking to further his position by obtaining a political posting, and he is in a city that has never been a feeder for National politics, such as Chicago and New York. He also has hit the tipping point where he can no longer hide his city's problem as higher than average crime. He has a literal war zone on his hands and is tired of cleaning up innocent bodies and telling the public it's an isolated incident. This chief simply can't pee on the citizens and call it rain anymore.

Detroit has long been a city that held social programs as the answer to low-income, homelessness and poverty and, other than the auto industry, has never embraced business as a way to improve their economy. I lived in Detroit during the riots and watched APCs cruise the streets enforcing the curfew. Socialists has never allowed the city council to do anything that would curb social program spending and it has finally crushed the city. Short-sighted decisions have killed it's long-term potential.

Two completely separate threads...

Ford Fiesta is mfg in multiple global locations. NA sales are coming from the Mexican plant.

In general, US auto mfgs have significantly improved quality, matching the best in class, and sometimes blowing away the competition. Kia, HORRIBLE quality ratings. But, good cheap transportation.

Now, on to Detroit... I drove through a previously thriving business area, and my wife pulled her firearm out of her purse and put it in the door pocket. A war zone would look in better shape. There are still some areas that look great, and the downtown area is making tremendous strives to improve. the new mayor is a successful business leader, and he was actually a write in candidate that won. They have some unbelievable debts, but bankruptcy will help to clean that up. Lot of people are beginning to step up. Will they succeed, IDK, but I'm seeing more progress in a short period of time then I've seen in decades of decline.
