This chief is not one who is looking to further his position by obtaining a political posting, and he is in a city that has never been a feeder for National politics, such as Chicago and New York. He also has hit the tipping point where he can no longer hide his city's problem as higher than average crime. He has a literal war zone on his hands and is tired of cleaning up innocent bodies and telling the public it's an isolated incident. This chief simply can't pee on the citizens and call it rain anymore.
Detroit has long been a city that held social programs as the answer to low-income, homelessness and poverty and, other than the auto industry, has never embraced business as a way to improve their economy. I lived in Detroit during the riots and watched APCs cruise the streets enforcing the curfew. Socialists has never allowed the city council to do anything that would curb social program spending and it has finally crushed the city. Short-sighted decisions have killed it's long-term potential.
