Default Dedication to duty, above and beyond

Poice officer gets medal of valor

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A Charleston police officer who was able to catch and maintain custody of a suspect despite having sustained multiple gunshot wounds during a foot chase has received the department's Medal of Valor.

Officer Cory Goldstein was recently presented with the Charleston Police Department's Medal of Valor. One of the department's highest honors, the Medal of Valor is awarded to an individual who was involved in an extreme risk of life in the pursuit of service and protection of the public.

Officials say Goldstein received the honor by demonstrating "extraordinary heroism in the face of imminent danger" on March 30, 2013.

According to a SLED report, Goldstein attempted to initiate a traffic stop around 10:40 p.m. in the area of Savannah Highway and Dupont Road, but the suspect, 26-year-old Mark Blake, Jr. did not stop. The suspect later wrecked his vehicle and took off on foot.

The affidavit states that while running from Goldstein, Blake fired several shots from a black Glock 22 at Goldstein, striking the officer in the leg, arm, hand, and the chest area of his protective vest.

Goldstein reportedly returned fire, hitting Blake in the arm and leg. Blake then fell to the ground, where Goldstein held him in custody until other officers arrived on scene.

Officer Goldstein was hospitalized for his injuries, and released three days later.

Blake was charged with attempted murder and failure to stop for blue lights.

The difference between we in LE and civilians in lethal force situations is we in LE are expected to not only to survive, but to PREVAIL!

Civilians aren't allowed to chase down murderous thugs so they stop being murderous thugs, permenantly....
