No, the thread I took that from is about modern firearms note the "However, for my muzzleloaders, I can use lard or beef tallow quite well, thank'ee."

A lot of guys on the forum swear by motor oil.

I have hurd of motor oil but it has harmful detergents in it that will destory a fire arm i have seen this done many times what looks good now might not next year cus of what we did today

OP, what is the humidity level down there?
We have had MANY rainstorms over the past weeks it is very humid. I overreacted but still need to get the surface rust off ASAP. No pitting yet and you are right, that would take a long time but still this needs to be dealt with. Thanks for your input!

Basically keep it dry till you can use a proper firearm oil...

Also think ahead. Get tons of silica in your safe if necessary. Every dehumidifier is overrated by its manufacturer. If it says good for 20 cubic feet of space it's more like 5. Before I came to realize it, I had a new shotgun barrel looking like measles in 6 months.

Ballistol, available at many firearms retailers is the best (IMHO) & only cleaner & lube that I use. Just follow the directions on the can.
