How to remove a rust spot from a prized antique arm?

My grandfather lent me his Stoeger Arms 4 gauge, to clean and oil. I found a small (about 1cm) rust spot on the barrel. What is the best way to clean this spot, without damaging the barrel?

Fine steel wool and gun oil. Rub lightly.

Copper Chore-Boy pot scrubber, light oil. Wet, let set, rub lightly (copper is softer than steel). Barrel will take on coppery look. Wet with more oil, buff with soft clean cloth, copper color comes off.

........I've had luck with steel wool and WD-40

I use either RB17 or Blue Wonder cleaner.....basically they are the same. Dissolves the rust and does not harm gun blue. Light work with very fine steel wool or something similiar may be needed depending on the rust.

some burlap cloth and Kano Kroil. then polish out with a soft cloth.

This is the way to do it.

It sounds important to you. It's worth the money to take it to a gunsmith to have it properly restored.

I woukf watch putting on rust remover on an old gun . Some of the best blueing comes from rust blueing . Basicaly evenly rust the barrel then boil it in distilled water. Changes from fe2o3-fe3o4.
Or from rust brown to black blue.
If u use and antirust on it u just might remove all the blueing .

F.k.
