Those orange tips are only on newer toys. I think they started requiring them in the last 10 or 15 years? The thing is that a guy could probably take and paint the muzzle brake (here in CA there is no such thing as a "flash hider", since they are highly illegal they somehow ceased to exist here) safety orange and then you could walk down the street with your AR because everybody would know it is not real.

Have you seen the TV series "SouthLand?" police drama - Lucy Lu plays an officer who shoots a kid and then removes the orange tip to CYA - then gets promoted.
