My favorite mid-size .357 is the Ruger Security Six. Long out of print but I recently found a very nice one for $350. I've never handled an L frame Smith but they look nice.

$500 is about what a new Ruger GP100 with 4.2" barrel costs, and that's a good gun.If I wanted to spend less on a new gun i'd get the Charter Arms 4" Target Mag Pug.

I second the GP100. I have the 6" barrel version and it's a sweet revolver. The 4" is probably more popular. It's easy to clean and handle.

I got this vintage S&W 19-3 for <$400. You just need to shop around until "THE" one falls into your lap!

I'll trade a left one for that.

You can get a 95% used S&W 686 plus, seven shot for that. I have one with the 6" barrel so CCW with it is limited to when I wear 16 sweaters or an Eskimo parka. Personally, my next wheel gun will be the Ruger SP101, .357. They can be had for just about your price.

I don't know where your finding a 686 for that kind of money, but call yourself lucky. I haven't been able to find one in my area for less than $700.

The S&W Model 65-2 is my favorite revolver. I got mine, in excellent condition from a pawn shop for around $400.00. Mine has a great trigger and to my dismay, I shoot it better, even in DA, than I shoot my 1911.

There is plenty of these, ex police/security, guns on the market.
