Default Tested a Couple of .44 Loads in my 629

I tested the .44 spl 165gr critical defense and the .44 mag 240gr XTP hollowpoints in my 6" 629 from 10 ft into gallon water jugs with 4 layers of denim. The .44 spl made it into jug 3 and the magnum made it into jug 5.To me, the magnum stopping in jug 5 goes against the overpenetration talk that is usually associated with a .44 magnum being used for self defense, but then again I am not an expert in water jug science.Insight please.

Also, the jugs looked like this: with the .44 spl the very first jug was almost gone, exploded..jug 2 was kind of expanded and jug three there was just an entrance hole with the bullet at the bottom of it.Now for the .44 magnum: first jug wasn't damaged that much at all but jug two was totally exploded, jug three was fairly expanded but jug 4 and 5 had just holes with the bullet in the bottom of jug 5, the magnum seemed to dump the energy deeper for some reason.

nice test Ninja. i feel for SD usage the 44 Spl. is a very capable load. i use three different XTP's, the 180, 200 and 240 gr. weights. usually the 180 and 200 in my 44 sple loads and the 200 and 240 in my 44 Magnum loads.

Default I do not trust 9mm now

I did the same test I did with the .44 caliber loads on a 9mm XTP HP 124gr with disappointing results. The .44 spl critical defense did great, and the XTP in .44 mag was just fine, probably because of the sheer energy causing a great expansion, but XTP in 9mm sucked.I have 2 home defense guns, one in 9mm and one in .44 mag, and I don't think I will ever reach for that 9mm when I hear a bump in the night ever again.I'm sure there are alot better loads in 9mm, but still...

If you are ever attacked by water jugs, you know what to grab. Water jugs have little similarity to the composition of a human body

Maybe not, but at least the water jugs do very closely simulate ballistics gel as far as bullet expansion, the penetration is different but you still can't deny that there is a difference in those rounds shot into the exact same media.

Actually your test proved just the opposite of what you believe. Water is very 'hard' when it comes to bullets. You stated the first jug hit by the 44 Mag showed almost no damage which indicated it had not yet started to expand. If this would have been a 'human' target it would have 'zipped' right through with little wounding. Your test are consistent to MANY others!!!

No 'water' does not even come close to BG, but it does give you a median to 'compare' one bullet to another.
