Default question

I carry a sig P220 .45 ACP as my primary SD weapon I just purchased a public defender in the 2 1/2" chamber, do u reccomend this as a good back up weapon and for self defense will the 45 colt do better than a 000 .410 or .410 slug? Thanks and hopefully you can help me as every one seems to have a different opinion about this revolver. Thanks and safe shooting.

I think it all depends on the range at which you engage the target. For anything outside 15 Yds. I'd go with the 45 colt, with the 000 you run the risk of collateral damage and maybe hitting a bystander. Now if you want a great in-fighter {inside 15 Yds.}, Get yourself some of the Federal Premium .410 Handgun 000 shells, they hold a good pattern at about 20 Yds.and Federal makes a #4 shot version also. I've yet to find a good .410 slug that is very accurate. I suggest that you get each of the ammo you want to use and head to the range, that way you know how the specific shell will perform and what to expect if you ever find yourself in a self-defense situation with the Judge.

i agree, the only two loads i shoot are 45lc and the federal 000 made for the judge, i wouldn't recommend the 410 slug as its not a heavy weight and will not penetrate that deep. for my every day carry in my judge i pack the 410 000 buck and if i ever do city carry i will load up mag tec 45lc. If you have never seen the 000 buck by federal made for the judge all the bb's are FMJ so they do go a little deeper inside the bad guys. (if you ever find yourself in a gun fight at 20 to 25 yards, A. you did something very wrong. B. i advise you flank your ass off)
In my opinion the public defender makes a great SD weapon, i don't mind the fact that it only holds 5 rounds as in real life unless you stole from the Russian Maffia ppl dont stick around after the 1st or 2nd shot at them, and i have never had a pattern problem with mine and 000 buck as at 25 yrds to my surprise it held all rounds on paper(although i advise not to shoot at someone that far out) i very much like it, crooked barrel and all :-D

I just found some info on the new Winchester PDX1 .410 load for the Judge. Check it out.
http://www.winchester.com/Products/New-Products/Pages/pdx1-410.aspx

It's supposed to be available this month.Looks lethal enough for close range personal defense, you know those discs are going to tumble. I can't wait to get a box of em' and head to the range.

prb, I saw that a few web sites have the PDX1 on back-order. I read that they're due to hit stores sometime this month.

It seems to me that every time a Mfg. comes up with a "new twist" on an old product (like ammo)... all it does is raise the interest raise the demand and ultimately raise the price... 410 ammo has always been relatively cheap. So how much does this new-fangled Winchester ammo cost? Probably double or triple the normal price of .410's. At 2.79 a round?? I won't be waisting my money on it.

Well Mark, I've seen it advertised for $13 for a box of 20, not bad in my opinion. The Federals are around the same price. The Judge is a relatively new gun, which would constitute a new kind of ammo hence, 410 Handgun. I've seen how regular 410 shotgun shells shoot in my Judge, not good. I've shot the Federals, and think they're great. Where would we be if ammo companies gave up on trying to improve the ammo we use? Sure some ammo types have proved to be real stinkers but thats all part of the process of refinement. So, it's good that manufacturers are continuing to make innovations.

We both stand corrected. It's actually a box of 10 rounds.

Actually, .410 pistols in various forms have been around for a long time. It's only new to Taurus. I had a two shot .410 Derringer back in the 60's...
