Default Stupid question

What exactly is a "cowboy" load? I was shopping for some inexpensive range ammo for my GP100 and almost picked up a pack of "cowboy load" 38 spl but put them back in favor of 38 spl wadcuters for $1 more. I figure they'd work no matter what, but I'm just curious what it means.

Cowboy loads tend to usually be flat nose, round nose, or round nose flat point shaped lead bullets (I'm not 100% sure if I'm right).

Cowboy loads are much more lightly charged than regular loads.

Exactly. They are for older style, or just plain older single action revolvers that can't take Corbon or Buffalo Bore pressure levels.

Used in a competive shooting sport known as Cowboy Action Shooting. Unjacketed lead bullets, lightly loaded.

Or for shooting cowboys- I can't remember which...............

Cow Boy loads are loaded light not just to protect the weapon (Does a Ruger Vaquero really need protecting) but also to make practice and competition more pleasant and to protect the targets. I do not shoot SASS myself but I have read the rules and both carbines and six guns are limited to under a thousand feet per second un-jacketed loads. (If memory serves) Also I believe buckshot is not allowed.
