Yours sound like the original Ruger issue grips. I found them to be very effective but ultimately wanted wood - I'm old fashioned and think that guns = steel + wood.

So, I put some checked Hogue pau ferro grips on my SP, which now looks like this...

The SP101 is my favorite "J frame" equivalent 5-shot 357.

I have the 3" and it is a joy to shoot even with the hotter loads. I currently carry it with 158 grain .357 mag Hornady loads. The video below is with those Hornady loads at 14 yards.

What's most interesting is that for me, unlike for some other folks, they actually decrease felt recoil.

Just bought one day before yesterday and i got my first chance to shoot today, it is a joy to shoot, i bought the 3" version and the hogue grip.

I just put wood grips on 2 of my Taurus revolvers, but they are smooth, and not checkered. I haven't had a chance to go to the range with them yet due to the weather, but I am hoping that to be true for me too, as I would like to outfit more of my guns with them.
