Mine is a 1956 Highway Patrolman, 4" barrel. I'm the third owner.
It had a very light rust spot on the tip of the barrel from holster storage (polished right off).
The cylinder ring is almost nonexistent. It's been fired very little in its fifty-seven years.

Rat packer that looks like a model 27 barrel on your pinto with that partridge site on it.
The model 28 was a no frills working gun. It had the satin finish blue and no checkering and ramped front site. The model 27 had the partridge target site and high polish blue and the checkered back strap and barrel rib.
That is the the only difference in a model 27 and 28.

The 28 also has a case hardened hammer and trigger. Does the 27?

Dude. I'm so jealous!!! That was the first gun I ever owned!!! I haven't seen one around for 20 years. If I remember correctly the bluing on those was the economy type. The Model 27 was the real deep pretty blue.

Thanks. In 1989 Cherry's Guns in NC issued 500 sets containing 12 guns each with guns consisting of both S&W's and Colt's. Each gun represented a Fredrick Remington painting and laser engraved a representation of it on the frame with the painting's name on the barrel. Each gun had features not normally found on that model. The 7" barrel on this one is just one of those. The model 27 was the only gun among the 12 that didn't have over sized grips. Most of those sets were broken up due to their high cost. With that said this one is one of five hundred 27's made and the rest of this set was divided up between my friends. I shoot this gun and it shoots great.

Well, should be nearing the receipt of my refinished Model 28. It went to SW on 3/4/13 so it's been a little over 4 months.
