Smith & Wesson model 28 Highway Patrol

Hello Folks,
I just purchased a S&W Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman .357 revolver in pretty much pristine condition. A little holster wear on the muzzle and cylinder where the bluing has worn and it does not have the original grips. Does anyone have an idea of the worth, availability/rarity of this pistol. It has a red front sight insert that I'm told was factory installed and adjustable rear sights. All mechanical aspects of the gun are sound and it has the original "duty" bluing (not the pristine shiny bluing of some guns). The serial number is N530XXX. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks...Richard

Ras, welcome to the forum, take a few and visit the new member welcome intro thread.

Also it's best not to list your firearms serial number. List it as N53XXXX. You should go back and edit your post.

Thanks for the advice, how do I go back and edit the post?

Welcome to the FTF community. You have good taste. A Model 28 is on my wish list.

I've had several model 28s and still regret selling all of them. They are basically a N frame model 27, but without the frills.

If you go back to your post you should see a edit tab in the bottm right. If you don't see it ask the moderator to edit your post. They often do this when someone post a serial number.

The M-28 is a work horse of a revolver. The -2 version was made from 1961 until 1982. The N prefix serial number puts it after 1965. You did not specify but most 28's were 4". There were some with 6" barrels but I am not sure of the exact numbers.

I found a nice 28 several years back for $200. They are probably in the $400-$600 range today.

M28

I recently acquired a M28 6" NIB unfired. Mine is serial# N954xxx
made in 85 or 86 I think. The M28 is a great gun.

Thanks for the feedback Robo, I am even more pleased at my purchase now. I can't wait to get to the range and air it out a bit. I load my own ammo so I'm also looking for a nice recipe for target shooting. By the way, it is a 4" barrel. Once again, thanks...Ras
