S&W Model 60 Chief's Special Dating?

My dad who recently passed away left behind a S&W Model 60 Chief's Special and I am wondering how to determine when it was made. Any thoughts?

Swing the crane out and PM me the FULL S/N.

Is it a 38 spl or a 357 Mag?

What is the barrel length.

What is the finish?

I don't have it with me, but it is stainless steel, I think it is 1.750" and .38 Special. Mom has the receipt, dad bought it used in 1987. Best I can figure it is early '70's. I'll PM you the #.

Those model 60's are amazing, I'm sorry for your loss.

The Model 60 was the first regular production stainless steel gun. The original 60-ND (no-dash) was built for more than a decade, so there are a lot of them out there. There was a long waiting list for them for the first few years, and they continue to sell in several configurations today. The Model 60 continues to be one of the best SA/DA small steel revolvers available.

Is the Model 60 the stainless version of the Model 36? I have a chromed 36 from the 50's.
