I had a Rossi .38 that was not rated for + p and I never chanced using them in it. I carried Federal Hydrashock that were not +p.

For self defense I use:
Hornady 38 spcl 158gr XTP. 800fps at muzzle. Prod. #90362
25/box

I do not plink w/my model 36. It's no fun, it's a belly gun! Get some RN 38 spcl to practise your speed loading. Do not use wad cutters as they are difficult to speed load. Don't buy $hit ammo. Get a 158gr to simulate your defence load.
Also get a spare box of the Hornady to practise with so you know what will happen. Got mine at Cabela's. Since they are not 5.56 or 7.62 you should be able to find some.

Use only 158gr lead bullets period. Those Smiths and Colt DS weren't meant to use +P's. Get a .357 if 38 special isn't good enough. For the range we used 148gr wad cutters. We shot up to 25 yds with both our service and off duty revolvers. I did just as good with my little Colt as I did with my S&W mod 10. It's been fun shooting for me since 1969.

Here are my J-Frames, a Model 36 and a Model 442.

I have a thing against rubber grips and fitted these with Eagle Grips Secret Service grips in rosewood. I've used Federal's non +P defense ammunition, but don't like to rely on the smallbore revolve for serious purposes.

Two nice looking pieces of hardware you have there, is 38 spcl not good for defense? I planon carrying this when and if they initiate ccw in Illinois.

When I was in LE the 38 is all we were authorized to carry. For years we wanted 9mm autos, but our complaints were ignored till 10 years after I retired. Usually the 38 special will do the job, but there is always the exceptions. Someone I worked with shot a perp in the head and he was still able to strike him with a machete taking his ear off. I still carry my Colt DS at times with reasonable confidence. One thing I'm sure of is that it will fire when I pull the trigger. That's one great advantage that they have over the autos.
