S&W model 10-4

1 Attachment(s)
Hey guys. I picked up a beautiful piece this morning. It is a model 10. I am looking for some smith junkies to help me date the thing. It has a pinned barrel and hammer mounted firing pin but no recessed cylinders. It is also after smith scrapped the screws in front of the trigger guard and on the top of the side plate. SN is c587xxx. Any info that you have is greatly appreciated.

All I've got on it is they were originally introduced in 1902. Obviously being a dash 4 yours isn't that old.
In 1944 they introduced an improved hammer block if That's any help.
You could probably call s&w and get the answers you're looking for or purchase their guide.

Nice gun. Congrats on the purchase. Call up a gunsmith in your area and ask if he has a book to date them. Mine does, but he's a busy guy so I won't be bothering him unless its my gun. Sorry.

I believe late 70's.

I came across a great reference on northeastshooters.com. The guy had a list of sn ranges for each model and the years they were in production. My gun was produced between 61-62. I wish I would have bookmarked the page because I am having a hard time finding it to re-post it here.

Yep. They made the change to 10-4, and almost immediately went to 10-5.

Thanks c3. Correct me if I am wrong here but the only difference between the -4 and the -5 is the front sight?
