Why?
Its a J frame not the strongest revolver made.
The barrel was fine so likely not a squibb.
So we really dont know for certain what caused it.

I have a J38 .38 with about 1100 rounds through it in three years. It is a carry gun (fits nicely in a pocket) but too light to be pleasant to shoot. I may reduce my shooting of it, and only shoot the +P if I have to (in defense). From this thread it doesn't sound like massive shooting is a good idea.
Seperately, I am glad you are okay, and glad S&W stepped up. Also, they have lawyers and have assumed you do, so you will never see anything from them on what happened unless it is in discovery for a lawsuit.

I think S&W should move you to the head of the waiting line and expedite! They should consider themselves fortunate they're not hearing from a personal injury atty. Not a knock on S&W, I'm a huge fan, but they need to make this correct.

Fortunately there was no need for a lawyer - I kept all my fingers intact and no scratches either!

Call Smith Customer service, They will advise you not to use Hoppes on the Sc hand guns. The notice was heard more when the Sc revolvers were first introduced. Snub

Ohh...ok...you have to call them. Not stated anywhere else.
Not in a manual or website...strictly a verbal thing.
