I can see the arguement but I disagree. I see the quick spread as an advantage but keep in mind A LOT of energy will be lost quickly as well. I've said it before and I'll say it again here....I think people are trying to make the 410 into something it's not.
It's not a handgun round(although playing with one could be fun) and it's not a self defense round(even from a long gun). I don't want to be on the business end of one but there are much better choices out there for SD then a 410.

First off I would never consider a "Governor" as a "home defense" weapon, only as a mobile "Personal defense" weapon.

Despite the loss of energy that your book tells you occurs, common sense tells me that a good spray in the face with even bird shot would stop most 2 legged attacks, especially followed by a .45 to the torso. The .410 isn't meant to be the only cartridge loaded in your cylinder, only a part of the set-up.

Once you dump the 1st cylinder, you could start loading moon clips of .45 ACP if the fight continues.

In my eyes the gun would be good for a desert/canyon land trail companion, when your only threatening encounters would be from humans, snakes and maybe a Coyote or porcupine, no bears!

This gun's use is limited and I was never even phased by the intro of "The Judge", but if I had a chance to get a bargain on one or trade, I may jump.

The purpose of it is real simple... to make money. The new owners at Smith are far smarter than their predecessors, and they know a good thing when they see it. Taurus has made a boat load off the Judge, and the market hasn't gone soft yet. I would have to imagine that at the SHOT show in Las Vegas this year, there were a lot of Taurus reps with a big grin on their face saying "I told you so."

Damn, y'all must live in some big-ass houses...and a tough crowd to please to boot. Some of my best work is done at less than 25 feet.

I think it feels and looks better built than the "Judge", and besides a possible HD and critter gun, IMHO, I think it would make a damn fine motorcycle/truck gun. YMMV

I don't see where it looks better or anything over a Judge. That being said I think it's a party favor more than a defense weapon. Just like the Judge. The only reason this looks any better is the name on the side. And that's not near enough to make this a viable HD option. To me all they have done here is paint a turd. and you can paint a turd in gold but you still just have a gold turd.

Damn, and here all this time, I thought Tango was the turd authority!

To be fair here, I am not taking sides or such, and we all have our opinions, but are you just looking at the picture Drum, or have ya held one, examined it, tested cylinder tolerance and even fired one on that assumption for comparison?

I have done some real "viable" things in the past, with some turds, if I do say so myself.

Let me say something here. The governor "can"and "may" shoot .410 shells, but it's real chambering is for the 45 Colt, not the .410 shell,so what's wrong with 6-.45 Colt or .45acp for an HD gun?I think the .410 part of it is just for having fun shooting little critters or something.

Nothing at all, however, this is a bit easier to tote around and it holds 8 rounds. I see the Judge and the Governor as gimmicks. Possibly useful if you have a ranch in the country though...

Proper 000 .410 loads from a long gun will be more effective than almost any common defensive handgun loading.

But take ANYTHING designed to be shot out of an 18" barrel, and shoot it out of a 3" barrel, and you're going to have a LOUD, weak gun.

A hypothetical AR15 with a 3" barrel would be like a .22lr that is ten times as loud. A hypothetical AR10 with a 3" barrel would be about like a .32ACP that is a a billion times louder. A 12g load in a 3" barrel will come out like a handful of thrown rocks, heh.

The only problem with the weapon is the lack of velocity prevents adequate penetration with .410. If they made a 10" judge, given shotshells use handgun powder, velocity would still be about 80-90% advertised and it would still be quite effective at close range. But, they don't, and this is all really just a genious marketing scheme by Taurus (onto which S&W and jumping to get some of the money while they can).
