S&W disassembly???

I was giving my S&W model 17 a much needed deep cleaning. After removing the cylinder I wanted to remove the extractor to clean out the crud under it. When I attempted to unscrew the ejector rod I was unable to do so.

I haven't done this for quite a while and I can't remember if the ejector rod is a left or a right hand thread where it screws into the extractor.

Can someone help me here?

Thanks

It should unscrew clockwise.

I'm thinking it's left handed threads. I'll check on my wife's 442 later and be sure.

I just checked my Gun Digest revolver manual and it states to unscrew it clockwise.

Before unscrewing it (and it is left handed) good idea to place at least 2 empty cartridge cases in the chambers. Otherwise you are placing torque on the ejector, and the two TINY little pins that hold it in alignment. Having the fired cases in there shifts force to the cylinder walls. Same when tightening back up.

At least two empty cases or dummies for support (more would be better). Left handed threads. The factory approved way would be to lock the ejector rod in a vise and unscrew the cylinder from it rather than use pliers on the ejector rod.
