I currently have 2 Smith & Wessons in .357 1 is a model 1989 classsic hunter N frame and the other is a 7-shot Talo that I traded my ruger gp-100 in on. I liked my ruger awfully well, but the Talo was an eye catcher and I also got almost what I pd. for it on a trade-in I couldn't pass it up, also I worked for Smith & Wesson up here in the Houlton, Me. plant for 13 yrs. so I'm kind of partial to them. "Ruger is a camp slut I would let anybody fondle and shoot , my Smith is like a blue-eyed blonde that nobody touches but me" sorry if I offended anybody with that comment, but that's how we talk up here in the County.

My vote would be for the 686. I've got a 6" 686 (no dash) that I've had since the mid 80's and it still kicks butt. I also have the 586 (no dash) and really like both of them. I've never fondled a Ruger, but I've never heard anything bad about them. Tough choice, good luck.

I bought a used 686 SS (seven shot). It has been worked on extensively and is a fantastic gun. It has a Red Dot sight that helps with target acquisition. It has great balance and very nice trigger action in both SA and DA.

I have a GP100 and I love it. I picked up some reduced trigger and hammer springs at the gun show on Saturday, put them in on Sunday. Still have to try them out at the range (it has been raining- outdoor range). On the bench though it feels great! I spent $25 on a set of six springs (3 for each) in different weights. I will try out several different combinations to see which one suits me best. The guy selling them said that if you shoot single action only one setup will work best, double action only another setup and if you shoot both a third setup works best. After I figure that out I plan on doing a trigger job on it. I will have to compare it to my 686 to be sure but at the moment I think the Ruger may have the 686 beat in the trigger department after the spring change.

I would definitely recommend finding an older one though just from what others have said about the Hillary hole!

Picked up a 686 2 1/2" barrel yesterday. First revolver, own a kimber 1911 and a s&w 22a both semi-autos. There is just a different feeling holding a revolver. More substance to it, like a machine. cocking the hammer setting the machine in motion. Daddy like!!!

I had both in 4" bbls. The 686 was my first gun, bought back in the '80s. I don't have it anymore (thank you ex-wife :-/ ), but still have the GP100. Both fantastic guns, but would rather have my Smith back.

Ive owned a 4" 686 and a 6" 586 (nickel), both excellent revolvers! I find the S&W action and trigger smoother than the Ruger's.
