I was given a 38 SW special, CTG; serial 6K87672; any one know its approx value?

That sounds like a close guess, but it's hard to say with out pictures or a model number.

The CTG marking means CARTRIDGE. So far, you have only told us the caliber- not even the make- since other companies made guns in the caliber of .38 S&W Special. Gives us some details- and one more thing-
