Ruger's New .357 SP101

I noticed that Ruger has come out with a new version of a .357 5 shot SP101 in a 4.2" barrel.Other than being slightly smaller and slightly thinner than a GP100 in 4.2" i'm not sure what the point of it is.Maybe you guys can enlighten me.

The SP101 is basically designed to be more of a carry piece, which is why it is smaller and lighter. With the longer barrel and I think adjustable sights it also would make a good target/cometition firearm.

Just that... it's smaller and lighter.

If you really want to be confused by the number of platforms a manufacturer has for the .357, go look at S&W's website.

The SP 101 has been around for over 20 years. It's as stout and reliable as any revolver can be. It has an excellant reputation. So..yes, in many ways, it's as good as a GP100. Depends on the purpose GP100-target/range, hunting, open-carry gun. SP101-range gun, CC gun.

10.5 oz lighter than a GP100 empty. Easier to carry.

I guess more or less if you don't plan on getting a CCW go with the GP100,if you think you might get a CCW you might consider a SP101 with 4.2" barrel.I don't like 5 rounds instead of 6,however the trade off is a gun as thin as a 5 shot snubby but with a barrel long enough for that .357 round to be all it can be.

The extra shot and weight found with the Gp100 make it a good choice for uniform carry as well as truck and home defense duty.
If I were backpacking the length of the Little Colorado or hiking the Arizona trail then I may covet the Sp101's lighter weight and compactness. There is a lot to be said for being able to keep your pants up!:D
