DefaultRuger Single Six cylinders

Does anybody know for sure whether or not a cylinder for an old model will fit a new model?

Ruger has two types of Single Sixes. 22 Lr with one cylinder and the 22LR/22mag with two cylinders.
You have to have the cylinders fitted to the gun. Ruger has a serial # engraved on the front of the cylinders that match the gun. If it is a 22lr when you bought it the 22 mag barrel has to installed before you can shoot 22 Mags. The 22 mag is slightly larger then the 22lr barrel. Cheaper to buy a Single Six with two cylinders then to convert one. You will loose some accuracy shooting 22lr through the 22mag barrel but the 22mag shoots tight groups.

Ok, I know new model cylinders are a drop in fit for new models. Don't believe the Ruger hype. Ruger cuts cylinders by the hundreds so any "fitting" would be extremely minor with most being non existant. I know of quite a few people that swap cylinders from two or three different revolvers with no problems. Anyway, I got a steal of a deal on a new model but it only has the magnum cylinder. If it needs minor fitting that's ok too. I can find new model stainless cylinders but not blued ones. I found a blued old model for half the going price of a stainless new model. I know there was a design change in the way the case heads are recessed but if they're dimensionally the same it should work.

If your going 22 lr cylinder on the 22 mag you might be alright. I would get a gunsmith to make sure it lines up correctly with the barrel or call Ruger. I looked in the manual it said not to use a cylinder unless the digits on the cylinder match the last 3 digits serial # of the frame. The parts list say the barrel, and cylinder must be factory installed.

I can handle timing a single action but it would be a sad thing indeed if a top notch U.S. company can't have machinery precise enough to make thousands of the same thing exactly alike so they're a drop in fit but an overseas co. like Pietta that makes cheap reproductions can.

Interesting, I have a Ruger 22 cylinder in the box---maybe I should look at it closer and see if it is LR or MAG---seeing that I don't have a Ruger SA, I should sell it.
