Ruger GP100 or S&W 28
Got the itch for a big bore revolver. Been thinking about either the Ruger GP100 or a Blackhawk. Either would be a minimum of 4" barrel. Stopped in a gun shop I occasionally go to and they have a whole collection from a guy who is selling a bunch of early 1970's NIB S&Ws. One of them is a Model 28. Never been fired and it has a $625 price tag on it. All three of these fall in the same price range.
Which would you go with either the new now Ruger or the NIB S&W?

gp100.. cant wait to get mine.. its sitting at the LGS waitinf for my 600 bucks. lol

as much as i like the Ruger revolvers and have a GP100 S/S 4" on layaway, that 1970's NIB M28 would definately go home with me at that price. the M28 was also called the Highway Patrolman is a N framed revolver. made from 1954 to 1986 and was the less fancy version of the M27. the M28 is a very good revolver and definately one you should consider. simply because they don't make it anymore and one that's NIB is not that common.

The Smith is cooler and more special... The GP100 is a stronger gun with better metallurgy...
As a collector i would pick the Smith.. as a user the GP100

Sometimes I wonder:
We spend SO MUCH money on guns to have redudancy "just in case" they get outlawed.
We spend SO MUCH on extra ammo so we will always have a stash "just in case" its outlawed..
If we just spent half of that money on supporting the NRA, we wouldn't have to worry about maintaining a stash "just in case"

It will definately be a user. I like the looks of the S&W but it is not in my DNA to keep it as a collectible NIB.

I have a gp100 and absolutely love it, wouldn't trade it for the world. Its a true work horse....

My vote goes to the Model 28. You can get a Ruger GP100 anytime...a NIB Model 28 is not so common, pre lock P&R all the better. I have a 28-2 from the same time...built like a tank with a sweet azz trigger.

the M28 is one sweet shooting pistol. nothing against the Ruger GP100 but the same reason as JPyle suggested wasalso my reasons for suggesting it. the M28 is a discontinued model of almost 30 years and the GP100 is still being made. it could be a long time before you see another one, especially NIB and unfired! the M28 is a very classic revolver that could very well even increase in value with time.

Already has apparently...they were selling at about $400 a few years back and mine was $500 a year ago...granted it is not pristine, NIB but it is in near mint condition.
