Ruger Blackhawk Help
I just bought a Ruger Blackhawk .357/9mm convertible model. Is there anything I need to know about shooting 9mm? Do I need moon clips? Can I shoot any type of 9mm rounds with any type of casing?
|
How could you use a Moon clip in a single action? No, just use the 9MMs in the separate 9MM cylinder. Yes you can use any 9MM Parabellum ammo. :)
|
The 9mm cylinder is reamed just like a 9mm autoloader barrel spaces off the case mouth no need for moon devices.
You cant use just any 9mm cartridge only 9mm luger/parebellum. Things like 9mm winmag 9mm kurz etc wont work |
Congratulations on your purchase. Can't go wrong with a Ruger revolver.
I find that I can't shoot 9mm nearly ad well as 38/357 in my Blackhawk. The bullet diameter is slightly different .357 vs .355 may be the reason. Or it may just be the shooter. |
As has been mentioned, you don’t need clips to load 9mm in the NMBH, but you may find different loads shoot significantly differently. The chamber throats on mine are .358” which is fine for .357 but is oversized for 9mm, so your gun may be picky about what it shoots well. Mine seems to do well with inexpensive CCI Blazer.

Blackhawk Convertible..
Ruger's main idea/reason for this combo was to have one, if not THE most versatile revolver in the world.:D
With the .38 Special/.357 Magnum cylinder AND the 9MM cylinder this revolver is a shooter anywhere. In other words, ammo IS available.. You will find that cast (lead) 9MM loads will be the most accurate in your revolver. Your revolver will have .3565"-.3575" bore diameter. Cast 9MM bullets are usually .356" diameter. FWIW: I cast bullets for my 9MM semi-auto pistols, and I lube/size these bullets to .357" for the best accuracy. Hope this helps..Bill.;) |

Just for curiosities sake, what did it run? I've been looking at one at the LGS that's on consignment. It's a Black colored Blackhawk with white grips. Comes with .45acp and .45lc cylinders, and according to the owner has never been fired. He wants $500 for it. Still in the factory box as well.

It was $499 from cabelas. It was sold as used but it was a Shot Show gun and it was never fired except for the factory test round
