I recently acquired a S&W 686 and i have a little bit of rust on it. Any body know a good way to clean off the rust on the stainless steel? Also, the rust by the back sight rail is hard to get to, is it a bad idea to take that off?

Get some 0000 steel wool and spray on some pentetrating oil then rub it down with the steel wool. If there is any pitting being stainless you can get some 600 sand paper and feather out the pits and match the original finish.

0000 steel wool wont even remove bluing on a blued gun. Make sure its 0000. Its a common practice to use 600 sand paper to redo the finish on stainless smith and wessons. You could also buy some blue wonder gun cleaning Jell it eats rust and wont harm a finish.
Go to smith and wesson forums .com register and post the pics and questions there. Its smith and wesson based site and many own the 686 there and will tell you all about the finsh on them how to polish them to a nickle finish or factory finish etc. Stainless guns are easy to work with that way.
Hey, just an update. I got on it with a nylon brush and some wd-40. The results were actually pretty good. The hard to reach places are about 90-95% cleaned up and the spots on the hammer on gone.
