Default Need to identify the age of a S&W 686

Its not old, obviously, as the 686's came out in 1980 i believe, but today I picked up a very nice pre-lock 686. Looks new, and came with 2 boxes of ammo from when the gun was bought...when was the last time a box of PMC jacketed soft point .357 was $12.99?

Anybody got one of them magical smith and wesson serial number books laying around?

Serial is ADF-4xxx

Because I know I'll get a "this thread is useless without pics"

Any dash number? If it is an undashed 686 check under the yoke for the letter "M". The first run of 686's had a problem with the hammer nose bushing. The ones modified by Smith (upgraded) were stamped with the M.

He doesn't mean in the serial number. What he means is when you drop open the crane and look inside the frame were it says Mod 686, does it have a dash? Like 686-1, 686-2, etc.
