Need help with caliber and year
 

I have a smith and wesson with no caliber markings on it the serial number on the butt is 871700 and where you fold the cylinder out has a number it looks like 23354 can anybody help me with this i think it is a 38 special not sure though where the pin that you push to eject the spent shells is not attached to the barrel like on a newer revolver it looks like maybe a 3 in barrel somebody told me it was pre 1904 can anybody help with this?
