Default IDPA Legal Revolver for both ESR and SSR?

The new rulebook is out for IDPA. If you run the Classifier with a gun that qualifies for multiple divisions, you can have the time count towards all qualifying divisions. My XDm 5.25" 45 ACP is light weight enough to satisfy SSP and ESP and because it's 45ACP, it also meets CDP. So, one Classifier gets me 3 classifications.

Yeah, I know this is the revolver forum. Here's my question. Is there a revolver that can do the same for both revolver divisions? Needs to be able to fire 357 magnum but it needs to weigh less than 43 oz. empty and barrel length is 4.2" maximum. Any suggestions?

A S&W m19 would fit that bill.

If you want something a bit more robust for lots of shooting, a 686+ would be hard to beat - and it holds 7 rounds as opposed to the traditional six.

I currently shoot a 629 in SSR. It would also qualify in ESR. It is a 44mag though. I was shooting it with a power factor of 191. I bought some 44 special brass and down loaded it for the last shoot. I was using HKS speed loaders. I got down to the 130 -140 power factor. I beat a bunch of auto shooters with that 629 at the last match.

I also just bought a S&W 64-6 as a project gun. But I would not try to use a 38 in ESR. I don't think you could make power. ESR is 165.

The problem I see with the 686 in the 7 round setup is that you are only allowed to load 6 rounds. Now you are having to take an extra second to be sure you line up the empty chamber with the barrel. Maybe it wouldn't slow you down. But I am thinking it would.

I expect I'd have to load with 357 to make power factor for the classifier and for any matches where I want to compete in ESR. Just don't want to buy a bunch of guns. (Heresy, I know...)

Bolata...most people join IDPA as an excuse to buy more guns. Talk like that will get your man card revoked. You have been warned.

Smith & Wesson does still catalog the 6-shot 686. So, even if the extra round is a real problem, there's still hope.

True. Wonder if there will be any at Wanamachers gun show in Tulsa...
