My step father has this gun, was trying to date it but from what I can find there should be a 'D' or 'S' in front of the SN but there is not. It is a double action and is not labeled as a '999'.

I went on the H&R website but didn't see anywhere to research SN's and it appeared they don't make pistols any more.

Also was looking for input on the value.

I cleaned it fairly quickly, it will need a through cleaning.

I have the same- Its a Sportsman, they proceeded the mdl 999-Should be marked H&R Sportsman on left side of barrel.
My serial # is 260, made in the 30's
I'd need yours to check DOM. Is the firing pin attached to the hammer?
Value is $250 - $300 IMO - (yours looks pretty nice)
GREAT & fun shooters!

I'm guessing that's it coming from the bottom?
81538 is the SN

Oh, yes it's marked 'H&R Sportsman'
'Double Action' on the left side of the barrel.

Hoping I can acquire this pistol at really really good price, would love to add it to my collection.

He also has a Government issue Colt M1911. At the moment that's all I know, also hoping to acquire that as well.. If I can get my hands on it I will post pics etc

Being the prefixes started in 1940, I'd venture very late 30's. didn't read to far in to the thread. Think if I can acquire this pistol I'll email H&R and see if I can get an exact DOM. Thanks for the hell there HOSS!!!

Well, I don't think I'm going to be able to buy this pistol.. I asked him if he wanted to sell it and he said 'no, just hold on to it.. I have a .380 at home'

Now, to work on the Colt! :)
